LA PLATA, Maryland - - Kathy Boone, a La Plata resident, competed and won first place in her division at the Take Flight Triathlon in Huntersville, North Carolina. Boone had competed in several local 5K and 10K races, but decided to take the next step into triathlons. On October 4, she completed her first sprint triathlon, consisting of a 14 mile swim, 10 mile bike race, and a 3.1 mile run. Boone finished with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 7 seconds, placing her at the head of her division. In the overall standings, she placed in the top 9 percent of women, and in the top 23 percent of the 585 competitors.

Boone is elated with her results and inspired to compete in future events. She spent the last month of her training focused on the swim. Boone said after the competition, “I was pretty much focused on the bike ride after driving the bike route on Saturday evening. It was so hilly, I was extremely worried that I wasn’t prepared for it. I stressed so much about the hills that I actually forgot about being nervous about the swim!” Her bike ride was ranked as her strongest stage, completing it in just over 32 minutes.
Her trainer for the triathlon, Marty Linclau-Miller, helped her prepare for the event physically, mentally, and technically. Linclau-Miller, a former competitive swimmer, practiced with her on refining swimming biomechanics and strokes. “Her physical capacity for these types of events far outreaches much of her competition. This, along with her unparalleled work-ethic, will only stand for additional future success. When Kathy learns to control her nerves a bit, her times will be astonishing! ...and that is in the works,” Linclau-Miller commented after hearing of her results.
Boone started training at Longevity Studios two years ago to “lose weight and tone up”. She managed to accomplish her original goals and move on to tackle the stuff of dreams.
Cliff Long, Longevity Studios President and CEO, said he knew Boone would succeed. “Right from the start you could tell she had that extra something to focus her efforts on her goals, but she also had the physical talents to back it up. The progress she has made and her transformation are inspirational.”
Boone plans to take a little time to digest her results, see where she can improve, and then start training for her next competition. With one sprint triathlon under her belt, she is confident that her technique will improve significantly and future events will be even more enjoyable.
