LA PLATA, Maryland - December 22, 2009 - Larry Edwards, a Welcome resident, turned 60 years old on January 20, 2007. He enjoyed a wonderful surprise party with family and dear friends. He was a successful business man and a life-long resident of Charles County. Physically, he was in great shape, playing tennis often and exercising daily. In the early hours of January 25, 2007, his life changed dramatically. He had a left, middle cerebral artery aneurysm rupture causing a stroke.
After brain surgery in 2007, he was going to physical therapy two days a week. He was receiving the normal physical treatment for his right side weakness, but he was not doing very well physically or mentally. He was referred to the Longevity Studios team by another stroke survivor who had been working with a Longevity Studios Corrective Exercise Specialist. In January of 2008, Edwards met with Cliff Long, owner of Longevity Studios, and started a three-day a week program. Edwards recalls, “After meeting with Cliff at Longevity, I was impressed with the concern and positive attitude toward all my needs for better recovery and general health. He did not pay attention to right-side weakness―he discussed ways to work the entire body for overall strength and health.”
Edwards has been training at Longevity Studios for two years. He is stronger physically and more emotionally stable from the program. His walking has become much stronger and steadier. Of Edward’s progress, Long remarks, “I'm not at all surprised at how well Larry's done. When he came to us, I saw a fighter and someone who wanted to get better, not only for himself, but for his family. He has never backed down from a challenge!”
Edwards has progressed from a three-day program to a five-day program with “homework” that he performs seven days a week. The homework is designed to keep him constantly active and improving in his function. Reflecting on his overall program, Edwards says, “Longevity Studios opened the door for my recovery by offering an individual personal touch and wellness care program. I was not just another right-sided weakness patient, I was evaluated for my special needs and a program was initiated to meet those needs. I look forward to my daily visits and always come away feeling great―maybe tired, but I feel great, knowing that I've received full attention to help my recovery. Although difficult life changes have taken place, I'm still here and able to continue my recovery every day. Longevity has proven to provide friendship, hard work, and a desire to help me improve.”
In the three years since the stroke, he credits his survivorship to all the wonderful doctors, therapists, family members, and friends who have helped him. For the future, he hopes to regain full use of his right arm and leg. With the use he has regained so far, he looks to renew his driving privileges. He's also looking forward to working with Civista on fundraising activities, especially the Annual Wine Tasting. Edwards is a true stroke survivor.
